Nothing says summer like a great summer movie, and the city has plenty for FREE. There are so many free movies, you could see one almost every day and not pay a dime! So grab a blanket, a bag of popcorn and a friend to snuggle up for some great outdoor movies.
HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival:
June 22 through August 24, Monday Nights
The gravel area around the park opens at 4pm and the lawn opens at 5pm and the movie starts between 8pm and 9pm. The 2015 lineup will be announced in mid-May.
The Central Park Conservancy Film Festival:
August 18th through 22nd at 8 p.m.
There’s a free movie every night at Rumsey Playfield. Gates open at 6pm and a guest DJ spins at 6:30 until the movie starts. starts. This year’s theme is “Scenes from our City” and features movies in which NYC plays a big role.
Beginning the week of July 8 through August 21
There are free movies every Wednesday and Friday. Movies for grown ups are shown on Wednesdays at Pier 63, and kids movies are Fridays at Pier 46.
Brooklyn Bridge Park Movies with a View:
Thursdays July 9 through August 27 at Brooklyn Bridge Park - Pier 1
These are movie viewings sponsored by Syfy, but they are not necessarily SciFi movies. Lawn opens at 6pm with music and movies starting at Sunset. This year's movies include the classic High Noon and the campy Sharknado 2! The lawn gets very crowded, so get there early!
Summerscreen - McCarren Park Free Movies:
July 8 through August 12, Wednesday evenings in the park at Bedford and 12th.
True to Williamsburg form, these are more adult, hipster films. 2015 features movies like Dazed and Confused and Clueless.You can stop by the Summerscreen website to vote for the final show, which takes place on August 13th. Doors open at 6pm with food vendors and live music. The films start at sundown.
Summer Movies on the Intrepid:
Fridays May 22 through August 6 on the Intrepid deck.
Action-packed movies, anyone? Hey, the Intrepid is a freaking aircraft carrier! The 2015 season opens with Top Gun. Entry is at 7:30pm and movies start at Sunset.
Summer on the Hudson: Movies Under the Stars:
Every Wednesday, July 1 through August 12 at dusk ~8p.m.
Location: Riverside Park South at Pier 1. 70th Street and the Hudson River.
Coney Island Flicks on the Beach:
Every Monday, June 29 through August 31 at dusk ~8p.m.
Location: West 10th Street on Coney Island.
Relax and enjoy that fresh ocean air while indulging in classic and modern movies!
Film Festival on the Green:
Fridays May 29 through August 31, various city parks, 8:30pm.
If you’re looking for a cultural escape, you’ll love this outdoor French film festival. Don’t worry- there are English subtitles. This year’s theme explores the many facets of love. Oui oui!
Remember, for all of these free movies, GET THERE EARLY! If you’re not there when the lawns open, you might find it hard to get a good spot. Bring some snacks, good friends, and enjoy just hanging out.
