The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation is now offering absolutely FREE yoga, pilates, zumba, aerobics, body conditioning, tabata and other fitness classes all throughout the five boroughs of New York City via their Shape Up NYC program.
Classes are taught by professional instructors who are willing to volunteer their time to the program which has a mission to combat health issues such as diabetes and obesity. All instructors must undergo a background investigation before being permitted to join the Shape-Up NYC team.
Classes are offered several days a week, every week throughout the year. Most classes are held at New York City Parks & Recreation Centers, but some are also held at parks and other locations across the city. Classes are for all ages and levels.
Some classes may require advanced registration and/or a recreation center membership. Always be sure to call ahead to confirm.
At my local recreation center, they are offering body conditioning and tabata. Down the street at the High Line they are offering pilates fusion and feldenkreis. As you can see, the program offers a wide variety of classes; everything from weight training to martial arts.
Find your local Shape-Up NYC location and classes on their website: nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/programs/shape_up_ny/shape_up_ny.html
If you’re interested in learning the basics of CPR, the FDNY offers FREE basic CPR classes (these are not certification classes) before some select Shape Up New York City workouts. So not only can you get in shape, but you can learn to save a life.
If you’re an instructor and feel you may want to volunteer some of your time, they are currently looking for those of you who are willing to teach a class one day a week for a six to eight week period.
So get in shape, have some fun and meet some new people all for free in New York City!
