You live in a city with some of the most beautiful people in the world. Top models pass you on the streets daily, as they walk into Dolce & Gabbana to buy yet another size zero dress. Every man you see is 6’3” and built like a god, while you have “girly arms”. With some of the more exclusive, spa-like gyms in the city costing $100 (or more) per month, how can you stay fit, healthy, and looking fab? You’re in luck! There are several new gyms in town offering affordable memberships.
New York City Parks and Recreation Indoor Recreation Facilities
There are FIFTEEN of these facilities in Manhattan alone. By signing up for a membership, you will have access to all of the recreation facilities in all Five Boroughs. These facilities include weight rooms, treadmills, stationary bikes, free weights, indoor pools, outdoor pools, running tracks, basketball courts, group classes, locker rooms, showers, and everything else you could hope for, and all at a fraction of the cost of a more expensive private gym.
The prices are broken down like this:
Under 18: FREE
Young Adults 18-24 and Seniors 55 and up: $25 per YEAR!
Adults 18 and over: $100 per YEAR at recreation centers.
Adults 18 and over: $150 per YEAR at recreation centers with indoor pools.
Find your location at: nycgovparks.org/facilities/recreationcenters
Even if you are in the adult category, you can get a full year membership to ALL of the recreation centers WITH and without INDOOR POOLS for less than a ONE MONTH membership at many private gyms and there are NO sign up or joining fees. If you don’t want to pay for a full year, you can ask for a six month membership, which costs exactly half of what the year long membership costs. Now that’s cheap in the city!
Blink fitness has 35 locations (and counting) in the New York/New Jersey area. This is a pretty straight forward, no frills kind of gym that offers weights, cardio machines and room to stretch. They have different levels of membership ranging from $15- $25 a month, plus joining fees.
Planet Fitness is known as the gym for people who don’t like gyms. They will literally ask you to leave if you’re being grunting and being a “lunk.” The basic membership is $10 a month (plus a yearly membership fee). Or for $20 a month, you’ll get access to all locations Planet Fitness, plus tanning booths, massage chairs, and unlimited guest privileges.
New York Sports Club
In order to compete with all the Blinks and Planet Fitnesses in the city, New York Sports Club started rolling out $20 a month memberships at certain locations. You’ll have access to all the great classes and equipment that New York Sports Club offer, at a fraction of the cost. This price is only available at certain locations, so check with your local club on the pricing options.
Remember, these are usually no-frills gyms, meaning they don’t really offer a wide variety of classes. If you’re someone who needs to try the latest fitness classes, like spin-lates or aero yoga, then these might not be the gyms for you. But if you’re just looking for access to treadmills and weight machines, we at Cheap In the City say “Go for it!”
